SA Endemics & Bird family Tour
69 Endemics, 400–450 Species, and One Representative of Every South African Bird Family!
This South African birding tour follows one of the continent’s richest routes for endemic birds and bird-family diversity, running from the misty Afromontane forests of Magoebaskloof to the iconic savannas of Kruger National Park, through the high-altitude grasslands and wetlands of Wakkerstroom, and on to the fynbos-rich mountains and coastal reserves of the Western Cape.
Built for dedicated birders, the itinerary focuses on South Africa’s endemic and near-endemic species while deliberately targeting the country’s exceptional spread of bird families, including Rockjumper, Sugarbird, Secretarybird, Hamerkop, Oxpecker, Mousebird, Bustard, Chat, Francolin/Spurfowl, Lark, Sunbird, Cisticola, Hornbill, Weaver, Crane, Batis, Kingfisher and Hoopoe, among many others.
Across South Africa’s key habitats, this safari has the potential to record approximately 400–450 bird species, including a high proportion of the region’s 69 endemic and near-endemic species. The route also offers excellent chances of two distinctive monotypic species, the Secretarybird and the Hamerkop, prized by birders targeting specific families. It is designed to give you at least one representative of every bird family occurring in South Africa, making it ideal for both endemic-focused and family-level birding.
More than a birding tour, this is a countrywide exploration of South Africa’s most important habitats, pairing legendary birding sites with exceptional scenery and big-game wildlife. The result is a comprehensive, once-in-a-lifetime trip through some of Africa’s richest birding regions, with outstanding opportunities to record both iconic families and highly localised endemics.
