What a bucket list birding moment!!! Spotting a Harpy Eagle is an exceptionally rare experience, so you can imagine our excitement when we spotted this beauty; one of the largest and most powerful eagles in the world!
This large, forest-dwelling bird with legs nearly as thick as your wrists is powerful enough to hunt sloths or monkeys using only its formidable claws, toes, and legs. They mate for life, sharing all parenting responsibilities, and care for its chick for up to two years. Sadly the Harpy Eagle is globally listed as Vulnerable and Critically Endangered in most Central American countries, including Panama.
